Type Locality and Naming

Charrat Gr – lowest formation in Kohat-Margala Province (Ko-MP). Holotype section: South of Panoba village. Author: F.E. Eames, 1952. Reference section: None.

Synonym: Panoba Shale


Lithology and Thickness

Gypsiferous claystone. At the type section, it consists of shale with occasional bands of sandstone. The shale is greenish grey to light grey, slightly silty and is calcareous towards the base. In places, greenish alum shale, with ferruginous and calcareous partings and veins of gypsum are common. Flaggy limestone bands occur at different levels. The unit grades into rock salt south of the type section. Gurguri sandstone, a localized unit exposed in western Ko-MP, towards the top of the formation, is not being discussed.

Thickness: 40-160 m. At the type section, it is 100 m thick. It is 40 m at Tarkhobi, and 160 m at Uch Bazar.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably underlain by Patala Fm

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by Shekhan Fm or Jatta Gypsum Fm or Bahadur Khel Salt Fm in different areas. In western part of Ko-MP, it is unconformably overlain by Kohat Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is confined to the Kohat area (western Ko-MP).
